Another drive has already started world – wide to ensure that professionals remain up to date within their fields of business. South Africa has also embarked on this program of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in which professionals are required to obtain a minimum amount of CPD points within a certain period of time in order to remain certificated with ECSA. CPD is defined as the “systematic maintenance, improving and broadening of knowledge and skills, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout an engineer’s career” – Electricity and Control April 2007 As of 1 January 2006 the Engineering Council of South Africa has made the rules in relation to continuing professional development as per the Profession Act, 2000 (Act No 46 of 2000), and in relation to renewal of registration as contemplated in section 22(2) of that Act.
